One of the most commonly asked questions I hear is ‘What is Developmental Therapy?’
I like to refer to Developmental Therapy (DT) as the umbrella, it helps to target and support a child overall. While many therapies will focus on one specific area, DT focus’ on the child as a whole and gives the parents strategies and guidance as well. DT is play based and typically takes place in a child’s natural environment such as home or daycare.
DT targets social interaction, problem-solving, motor skills, sensory concerns, focusing on a task, following directions and more! Though the DT is the one working diligently on the child’s success, the Parents and Caregivers also have a role to play and it’s integrating these strategies into daily routines to ensure progress of the child. Developmental Therapists collaborate with all the other specialists, Speech, Occupational, Physical and whoever else the child may see to help the success of the child by working together.
