Educational Advocacy Services

Educational Advocate Services in McHenry & Lake County, Illinois

An educational advocate is a professional who supports students and their parents by ensuring their educational rights and needs are met. At Wyndow Advocacy, we work closely with families, educators, and school teams to make sure every child receives the services and support they deserve. Advocates help families navigate the complex world of special education, resolve conflicts, and communicate effectively with schools. Our goal is to empower parents with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their children long after our work together ends.

Did you know that in Illinois, anyone can call themselves an advocate — no qualifications required?

That’s why at Wyndow Advocacy, we take professional standards seriously. Jodie Saylor, DT, BCASE, is a Board-Certified Advocate in Special Education through NASET and brings years of experience in early childhood development, behavior therapy, and special education. Frequently Asked Questions About Educational Advocacy

What does an educational advocate do?

An educational advocate helps parents understand school processes and make sure a child’s educational needs are properly supported. Advocates may review records, help families prepare for meetings, explain options, and support communication with the school team so services and accommodations match the child’s needs.

Can an educational advocate attend IEP meetings with me?

Yes. An advocate can attend meetings such as IEP eligibility meetings, annual reviews, 504 meetings, manifestation determinations, and other school conferences. We support you during the meeting and help you understand what’s being discussed so you can make informed decisions.

What’s the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan?

An IEP (Individualized Education Program) is for students who qualify for special education and includes goals, services, and measurable supports. A 504 plan provides accommodations for students with a disability who need supports to access learning but may not require specialized instruction.

When should I hire an educational advocate?

Many families reach out when they feel stuck or overwhelmed — for example, if a child isn’t making progress, services don’t seem appropriate, communication with the school is difficult, or a meeting is coming up and you want support. It’s also helpful early in the process if you’re unsure what to request or what documentation matters.

Do you help with eligibility and evaluations?

Yes. We can review evaluation reports, school records, and progress data to help you understand eligibility categories and whether results align with your child’s needs. We also help families prepare questions and requests for the school team.

Can you help if we’re having conflict with the school?

Yes. Our goal is to support collaboration, not confrontation. When disagreements happen, we help families clarify concerns, organize documentation, and communicate effectively to work toward student-focused solutions.

Do you provide parent coaching?

Yes. Parent coaching is a core part of our work. We help you understand common special education terms, what to expect in meetings, and how to advocate confidently so you can continue supporting your child long after our work together ends.

Do you work with private schools or only public schools?

We can support families in many settings, but most advocacy work relates to public school processes (IEPs/504s). If your child is in a private school, we can discuss what support options may still be available and the best next steps based on your situation.

Do you serve families throughout McHenry County and Lake County?

Yes. Wyndow Advocacy serves families across McHenry County and Lake County, including Crystal Lake, McHenry, Woodstock, Cary, Lake Zurich, Mundelein, Grayslake, and surrounding communities.

How do we get started?

The first step is to contact us and share what you’re concerned about (upcoming meeting, current plan, evaluations, or communication issues). We’ll help you determine the most useful next steps and what records, if any, would be helpful to review.
